5 Interesting Physics Facts

"There is nothing more deceptive than an obvious fact"
 - Cheryl Powers

1. Triple Point:

Water can exist in liquid, gas and solid form at the same time. The single combination of pressure (approx. 611 pa) nd temperature (273K) at which liquid water, solid ice and water vapor can coexist in a stable equilibrium.

2. Astronaut's height in space!

Astronauts height increases in space. When astronauts enter into the outer space from the Earth, the gravity that acts on them is low and after a certain limit the gravity that acts on them becomes zero. Therefore the downward force that acts on their bones will be zero or very low. So the height of that person in space increases 2 inches. But when they return back to Earth, they will again experience the gravity and their height becomes normal again.

3. Einstein against Quantum Mechanics!

Einstein contributed many works in different fields of physics. Though he is known for his contributions to the development of quantum theory,  he didn't believe in quantum mechanics. Because it was probabilistic in nature when compared to the classical mechanics were we can measure what has happened 1000 years back to what will happen after 1000 years accurately. Einstein stated that, "God doesn't play dice".  But the interesting point to note is, his work on photoelectric effect led to the gateway of quantum mechanics.

4. We don't physically touch anything!

When there is matter or a substance, it will be made up of atoms, where it's center has nucleus surrounded by the cloud of electrons in it's outer part. We humans are also made of atoms eventually with the atoms having nucleus and the electrons in the shells. We know that the like charges repel each other. So when we touch an object we would obviously have a repulsive force experienced by the electrons in us as well as in the object we touch. Therefore we don't physically touch anything, rather we feel a repulsive force.

5. We are made of 7 billion billion billion atoms!

Atoms are basically composed of nucleus at the center with the electrons in the shells. But 99.9% of the atoms is an empty space. Even our human body is composed of atoms. We are in the solid state with liquids and gases within our body. Therefore there are approximately 7 billion billion billion atoms in our body. Every year  98% of  these atoms are replaced by us.

BLACK BODY RADIATION

As we already saw in our blog ‘How do we see colors’, “It’s the material, Not the color! – how do we see color?”, black body is an ideal object.          Black body is an object that can absorbs all frequencies of radiation.          Due to this the object get heated up and when its temperature equals to the surrounding temperature, the object starts to radiate energy in the form of electromagnetic radiation .         Depending upon the temperature of the body the intensity of the radiation of different frequency varies.          Almost all the object behave like an black body (but not like an ideal one), example: sun, human body, hot objects …          In 18 th century when scientist thought that they found almost everything in the field of physics, black body concept came as a challenge in front of them.        ...

The domains of physics

Physics is divided in to four major domain with respect to size and speed.          Particle size more than a nanometer and in less speed compared to speed of light – classical mechanics.          Particle size less than a nanometer (near to size of atom) and in less speed compared to speed of light – quantum mechanics.          Particle size more than a nanometer and in speed comparable to speed of light – relativistic mechanics.          Particle size less than a nanometer (near to size of atom) and in speed comparable to speed of light – quantum field theory. Any type of study under physics will come under this four categories. With respect to energy:          Milli electron volt to few electron volts   -   solid state physics          Kilo electron volt to million electron volt   - nuclear physics   ...
